Standalone (Beta)

Please note that the standalone version of VRLF is in beta and is currently only recommended for advanced users who already have the PCVR version up and running. The standalone version is not truly standalone, as it still requires a PC to run and stream the light gun games, but it offers unique standalone features like passthrough and hand tracking. It also splits the rendering load that running both VRLF and a light gun game puts on one machine, so people with less powerful PCs can still enjoy VRLF at smooth framerates.

In addition, for users with multiple headsets, the standalone version can be used for LAN play. Instead of starting the PC as a server, turn on Local Area Network in the Multiplayer menu. This keeps the VR rendering on the PC version but allows the standalone version to connect as an additional player, by selecting the PC from the Multiplayer menu on the headset.

The standalone version was developed on a Quest 3 and has not been tested on Pico headsets or the Steam Frame.

Installation

As the standalone version of VRLF is in beta, the APK must be sideloaded onto your device. The APK file can be found in the Standalone folder of VRLF's Steam install directory, usually steamapps/common/VRLF/Standalone. Follow the usual steps for sideloading an APK. On the Quest 3, the app appears under "Unknown Sources".

Basic Use

The standalone version of VRLF acts as a client. Start the PC version in server mode by pressing the "Restart as Server" button in VRLF's Multiplayer menu. This restarts VRLF on the PC without any of the VR features, but still with window capture.

Once the PC is in server mode, start the standalone app on your headset and it should connect to the server over your local network automatically.

From here, you can capture windows on the PC as normal, as well as select profiles and launch shortcuts. The server streams video to the headset, and the headset sends inputs back along the same path that multiplayer uses. If you are having trouble with the video or audio, you can change the stream settings in the Streaming panel beside the Multiplayer menu. The default is PyroWave at 60 Mbps and 720p, which can be raised if you have good Wi-Fi or lowered if you are having trouble. The PyroWave decoder runs on the GPU, so if you are seeing low framerates, try switching to HEVC if your headset has a hardware decoder (like the Quest 3).

Standalone Features

Passthrough

Passthrough can be selected as an environment on compatible headsets, and the Passthrough panel beside it lets you adjust its settings.

  • Room Lighting: looks for light sources in the room and matches the lighting on cabinets and guns to the room's. It also matches the white balance of the cameras.
  • Camera Grain: adjusts the amount of noise applied to the 3D models, to help blend them with the passthrough view.
  • Room Brightness: dims the room, for a more cinematic effect and to help the 3D objects blend into your surroundings.

Hand Tracking

Hand tracking can be enabled for either the left or the right hand from the General menu. At least one controller is needed to pick up guns. Hand tracking is currently only supported on Quest headsets.

  • Your tracked hand can use menus and panel buttons, and handle VR reloads (if enabled) and slide/pump reloads as your off hand.
  • Close your hand to grab things like slides, magazines or the fore grips of guns.
  • Point your finger to press menus and panel buttons.
